Evolution World Wide : Consumer Beware!

Posted by on August 8, 2012

I got this idea awhile back that it would be really fun to take video of of my actual journeys across America as well as my scooter rides.  I knew someone that had tried video sunglasses and was pleased with them, so I thought I’d also give them a try.

It seems I chose the wrong company to purchase them from.  Welcome to the world of Evolution World Wide.

If you go to the upper right hand side of their website, you see delivery times:  US and Canada 3-7 business days, other countries 10-20.  What does that tell you?  First, it might indicate that Evolution World Wide ships from the United States, as the delivery times are shorter here.  Second, it’s suggestive that you actually receive the item in said time frames.  Of course, none of this is true — not even close.  I wish I’d read Ripoff Report before placing my order.

But I did eventually receive the sunglasses.  It came with a sloppily-written user manual that resembled broken English.  That’s because it was broken English. (The package came from Hong Kong).

I could not get the sunglasses to work.  So I called Evolution World Wide to see if there was something I was doing wrong.  No answer. I called again and again and again.  No answer.

I contacted them via e-mail explaining that the lights on the camera seem to work until I put in the memory card — then everything would freeze.  In fact, I could not even turn off the glasses unless the memory card was removed.  This was their reply:

Please download camera glasses manual from:

Well, interestingly enough, the online glasses manual was quite a bit more informative than the one I received with the package.  In the online manual I was instructed on how to actually charge the battery first and, equally important, that I needed to format the memory card before inserting it.  Nice to know!

Now, please explain to me why the memory card can’t already be formatted?  After all, it appears by the pricing that I paid a good $32 for my 16-GB memory card.  Now I have to format it?  I did click on the link to the instructions on how to format this card but certainly could not figure out  where in the heck I was supposed to plug this tiny chip into my laptop.  Was I missing a piece of hardware?

I tried responding to my ticket to inquire about this.  Of course it’s absolutely impossible to login and respond to a ticket — it’s another loop!

I started all over, new ticket.  I’d already had enough and I’m pretty sure I asked for a refund.  I’m pretty sure they didn’t hear me:
you need to plug the sd card into your pc to format it.  you can use any card reader just plug the sd card into card reader and plug into pc to format.

A card reader.  I suppose everyone has card readers laying around?  I don’t have one.  Ok, I suppose it makes total sense then that I need to go out and make a purchase so that I can make Evolution World Wide’s product function?  Well, if I’m the only human being in the modern world without a card reader, I suppose it serves me right!

I shopped around.  The first couple places — $15 – 20.  Then, Office Depot.  TIME OUT...

I would like to take a moment here to talk about Office Depot.  I would like Evolution World Wide to take a moment to get a glimpse of what customer service is all about.  I walked into Office Depot and a polite young manager assisted me in locating one of these card readers.  It was $12 – 15.  I explained to the young man that I was incredibly frustrated that I was having to make this purchase in the first place.  I told him about Evolution World Wide.  He was appalled.  He said,

“Follow Me.  I’ll take care of ya.”

I followed him to the cashier.  He told the cashier, “$4.99”

My jaw dropped, “Really?  Thanks man!”

He shook my hand and smiled, “My pleasure.”

Was it just a dream?  No.  In fact, I was so impressed that I stuffed the receipt in my wallet and made it a point to participate in my first survey.  That reminds me…please excuse me a moment while I do that right now…

According to the instructions, I think I formatted the card correctly.  Of course I had no way of knowing for sure because when I called Evolution World Wide repeatedly, they did not pick up the phone.  After formatting the card, the sunglasses still did not work.  I e-mailed Evolution World Wide once again.  This time, I briefly explained what happened again and told them that, unless they CALL me, I demand a REFUND.  No more e-mails.  Of course they did not call me.  Of course they did not issue me a refund.  I’m not sure they even heard me.  Here was their response:

also try another TF card , it could be that the microSD card is faulty

Does anyone know how much it costs to mail a package to Hong Kong?  $15? Do they have zip codes or postal codes in Hong Kong?   But wait, perhaps it’s the memory card!  I could just zip over to the store and pick one up for $30, right?  It seems the least I could do…

I’m beyond frustrated.  All I want is my money back.  Any ideas?
