RiverCat Journal: Preparations

Posted by on July 31, 2012

Current Venue:  Las Vegas, NV
Campground: Riviera RV Park

I’ve talked to a lot of folks that seemed to really like my idea of working in the Grand Canyon, North Rim.   In fact, I was really getting pumped up about it.  Before calling back HR, however, I double-checked my Mountain Directory West atlas to make sure the ascent wouldn’t be too hard on my rig.  I quickly realized that I’d misread it the time before.  The ascent is a 6% grade for 10 miles — just like Baker Grade!

It’s a good thing I checked.  I can’t risk damaging my vehicle with such a meager savings for a minimum wage position.  Bummer.

Plan B.  Phoenix.  Why head to Phoenix in August?  Two reasons:  (1) It appears to be the easiest route out of the mountains, south out of Vegas on 95 and then interstate 10.  (2).  There’s a big poker tournament the second week of August.

On August 7th I may hear back about a potential dealing gig in October for a week.  That would be in Minnesota, giving me about 2 months to get up there.  That’s doable.  If not, I may just continue playing poker…

It seems whenever I’ve been able to play poker for a solid week without any distractions (ie dealing gigs, breakdowns, injuries, bad location), I seem to do just fine.  In fact, my $5300 in earnings this year came pretty much entirely during my 4 weeks in Redding and the last 3 weeks of this month — nearly $800 per week.  That’s hard to ignore and, while it may ultimately be my path again, I’ll gladly take the work in Minnesota…

To break up the trip, I’m planning on stopping in Quartzsite for a night or two!  This is my first visit to this famous RV town and I’m really looking forward to hitting the swap meets (if my knee permits it) and visiting with other full-timers.  I’m going to check the Big Blogroll soon to see if any of my favorite bloggers might be there, but if you happen to know someone, please point them out!

Tomorrow’s a busy day.  It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the move and there are a few things that need some attention.  My tires, for instance.  Then, Wednesday I’m on the road, again!

I’m still following your blog. We’re going to NM from Colorado Springs, then OK and head East through TX. We have to be in SC Oct 31 and Fla on Nov 15. I’m not sure how far East you’re going, but it would be neat to catchup with you along the way.

Dee after Phoenix for a week or two I plan to go through NM and OK as well! In fact, I”ll probably spend 2-3 weeks in Oklahoma. Let’s keep tabs on each other as it seems there’s a fair likelihood we’ll be in the same neighborhood at some point!
